Blanket ban proposed on lap-dancing clubs and sex shops
Hounslow Borough residents are being asked for their views on proposals to ban sex shops, strip clubs and lap dancing clubs across the borough.
The move follows endorsement of a draft policy by the council’s licensing committee last night (11 March).
Councillor Ed Mayne, cabinet member for community safety and regulation, said,“Sex clubs fuel a culture which demeans women – which is dangerous for society as a whole. This council’s message is clear – sex clubs are not welcome here.”
Although the borough currently has no sex establishments, a recent application for a sexual entertainment licence by a club originally called Mist was turned down last year.
Cllr Mayne continued,“Residents made it clear during the issue over the application by Mist that they did not want a sex club in the community. This consultation shows we have listened to their concerns.”
Consultation on the draft policy ends on 19 April and the views will be brought back to the licensing committee before being ratified by the council.
On 5 June 2011 the council adopted new powers under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 which enabled the council to licence Sexual Entertainment Venues under that legislation.
