Hounslow Council Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults

Advice and information on Awareness Week at the Civic Centre

Help is on hand for vulnerable adults in Hounslow who may be at risk of neglect or abuse.

Launched this week (June 10) by the Mayor Cllr Sachin Gupta, Hounslow’s Safeguarding Adult’s Awareness Week includes information stalls across the borough, and a conference at the Civic Centre for adults at risk of abuse, their carers and residents who want to know more about the issue.

Cllr Shantanu Rajawat, cabinet member for adult social care and health services, said:

“It is a sad fact that adult abuse exists, and is more widespread than people think.

“People who are physically, emotionally or psychologically frail and dependent on others for care are often neglected and taken advantage of by others. This is especially challenging as in most cases the perpetrator will be a member of their family, or someone else who claims they care for them.

“It happens mostly at home, and can affect vulnerable men and women from all social backgrounds. Those who suffer are rarely able to challenge those who harm them because they often lack the confidence, knowledge and support to deal with such abuse.

“I hope that this week’s activities will help make people more aware of the issue, so they can recognise when abuse is taking place, what they can do to help.”

The conference takes place on Thursday, 13 June from 10am to 1pm at Lampton Park Conference Centre, and will help people understand the ways in which vulnerable people can suffer harm, how to recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse, and what action can be taken to protect the person at risk.

If you are concerned about abuse, either happening to you or someone you know, please do not ignore it. Call Hounslow’s Safeguarding Adults Team on 020 8583 4515 or email adultprotection@hounslow.gov.uk. Callers do not have to give their name, but the teams may need to act on the information given and contact other relevant services.
