Hounslow Council has now issued letters to residents
Hounslow Council has written to residents in areas of the Borough chosen for the Wheeled Bin trial to inform them that the first collection will be on the week beginning July 15th. The trial, which was supposed to start this month was delayed due to a shortage of bins. Councillors in Chiswick have opposed the introduction of a wheeled bin trial in the Riverside ward.
The 140 litre wheeled bin will be delivered to households in the areas chosen in the week beginning July 8th. The bin will be marked with the house number and there will be an information leaflet for each resident. Collection and recycling days will remain the same.
People who wish to use a larger (240 litre) bin, or who wish to use their own wheeled bin must contact the Council. People who need assistance can also ask the Council to have their bin collected from the doorstep instead of the edge of their property if they are elderly or disabled.
The wheeled bin trial will last for six months and after this residents will be consulted about their views of the trial, according to the Council letter. Residents in the Riverside area of Chiswick have already voiced concerns about the introduction of wheelie bins and local councillors have said they are not convinced it will lead to higher uptake of recycling, as the Council intends.
The Council says a move to wheelie bins will ensure that black rubbish bags left on the street for collection are no longer torn apart by vermin such as rats and foxes leaving rubbish blowing across the road. The Council says the 140 litre bin is sufficient for an average family of five when all recycling containers are also used. Any rubbish bags left on top of next to the wheeled bin will not be recycled as residents need to recycle their waste instead, they say.
