Brentford Barge Sheds To Get A Makeover

Part of regeneration plans to brighten up the area

Brentford’s post-industrial landscape will be brightened up when the old barge sheds alongside the Grand Union Canal get a facelift, helping to support new homes and jobs in the wider area.  

The final version of the artistic illustrations – by artist Simon Periton – for the new cladding of the sheds has been released by Hounslow Council (Sept 11).  

Work will start on site this November and will include other improvements such as new lighting to the sheds and under the Great West Road bridge – these initiatives aim to improve accessibility to the high street from the towpath.  

The facelift is part of the wider regeneration of Brentford and the local high street, which will include other projects such as the creation of a new civic square in Market Place. The project is part of a series of initiatives funded by Mayor of London, Boris Johnson’s Outer London Fund which is investing £1.8 million in Brentford including £557,000 from Hounslow Council. 

Councillor Steve Curran , cabinet member for housing, planning and regeneration, said: “These artist ’s impressions paint a picture of what the sheds should look like. 

“Together with the Bees’ plans for a new stadium, the Ballymore centre and the regeneration of the high street, Great West Road and canal-side, there is a real buzz about Brentford.” 

Kit Malthouse, Deputy Mayor for Business and Enterprise, said: "Exciting plans for the regeneration of Brentford are now taking shape. Using public art and industrial heritage is an inspired way to make this stretch of the canal more accessible and attractive for businesses, helping to bring economic growth to the high street in Brentford. It is just part of how money committed by the Mayor is helping to revitalise Brentford’s high street."

The renovation of these sheds will animate the local area and provide a positive and inviting route from the Golden Mile to Brentford Town Centre.  

Visitors from the Great West Road will help drive economic activity in the local area, increasing footfall along the canal and high street and supporting the delivery of new homes and jobs in the adjacent New London Award-winning Brentford Lock West, by ISIS Waterside Regeneration. The arts project will help to achieve a community vision that incorporates outdoor events, public art initiatives and strong high street branding to deliver a vibrant and unique centre.

Outer London Fund (OLF) works to create a new civic square and improve shop fronts in the heart of Brentford High Street will be announced later in the autumn. The OLF, launched by the Mayor on 13 June 2011, is a three-year initiative dedicated to strengthening the vibrancy and growth of London’s high streets and town centres. At the centre of the initiative is funding of up to £50 million, supported by the offer of advice that can be targeted at improving the character, quality and economic vitality of selected high streets and town centres.
