Armed Forces Day Ceremony
Hounslow honours war heroes at special event
Soldiers from the Welsh Guards were joined by Chelsea Pensioners and veterans from the Royal British Legion, including Gurkhas, at a special ceremony to mark Armed Forces Day.
A large crowd turned out to pay their respects at the event which also featured local children from Beavers Community Primary School, Brentford School For Girls and Edward Pauling Primary School, who placed 100 poppy crosses around the Armed Forces Memorial Tree in front of the Civic Centre.
Mayor of Hounslow, Councillor Corinna Smart, said: “In this centenary year commemorating the start of World War One, this year’s Armed Forces Day is especially poignant.
“Hounslow is proud to honour our armed forces and we will always remember the ultimate sacrifice of well over a million British and Commonwealth servicemen and women, who died in wars and conflicts since World War One.”
Borough Deputy Lieutenant, Richard Kornicki CBE said: “On this day, we stop and pay tribute to the Armed Forces, not just to the Welsh Guards here in Hounslow, but to everyone in the Armed Forces, whether in the front line or in support; whatever their Service, whatever their unit, whatever their role.”
The ceremony marks the start of several events in the borough commemorating the start of World War One on 4 August 1914 which are detailed on a dedicated page on the Hounslow Council website.
The unveiling of a new war memorial in Hounslow High Street will take place on Saturday 2 August.
