Council Plan Bus Trip to City Hall to Promote Culture Bid

Hounslow hoping to win extra funding for arts in the borough

Hounslow Council have hired a bus to bring Steve Curran the council leader, councillors, local residents, school children and some dancers to City Hall this Monday (28 October) as part of their bid to become a London Borough of Culture next year.

London Borough of Culture in 2021 is a GLA-backed initiative to promote culture across the capital which will provide an opportunity for the borough to get an extra £1.35m funding for cultural activity.

The Cabinet’s approval of the borough’s London Borough of Culture bid last week included a commitment to match funding of up to £337,500, plus £67,500 in in-kind support in the event of the bid being successful.

The borough’s cultural activity is dispersed across the borough with two council-funded providers; Feltham Arts and Watermans Arts Centre delivering a range of activities across the borough.

The Borough of Culture award Cabinet also approved a new approach to funding culture across the borough with the creation of a We are Hounslow cultural commissioning budget. This new arrangement will replace the historic use of cultural grants. The council wants to see its commissioning activity focus on the movement of people, ideas and, building further community and cultural capacity in Hounslow.

The bus sets off from Feltham Library, which is the home of the Feltham Arts Association, at 10am. It then makes its way via Hounslow to the Watermans Arts Centre. It will then travel via Gunnersbury Park, Chiswick House before arriving at City Hall before 12.30pm
