Second Round of Glyphosate Spraying Set to Begin

Residents still can opt out by doing their own weeding

Residents in Brentford, Isleworth, and Chiswick are being advised to prepare for the second round of glyphosate-based weed spraying, scheduled to begin shortly in wards in the west of the borough and continue east through October. The treatment is part of Hounslow Council’s borough-wide weed management programme, which resumed chemical spraying earlier this summer following concerns over the effectiveness of manual removal.

The second cycle will target hard surfaces such as pavements, footpaths, and roads, with additional attention given to shrub beds and grassed areas where necessary. Each ward will receive a four-day visit from dedicated teams, who will inspect and clear residual weeds that were not fully eradicated during the first spray.

Spraying is weather-dependent and may be delayed by rain or extreme heat, which can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. Streets obstructed by parked vehicles or lacking visible weed growth will be skipped.

Residents who prefer not to have glyphosate used outside their homes still have the option to clear weeds themselves. Streets that are visibly weed-free will not be sprayed, and there is no need to notify the council or submit proof of removal.

Community groups and WhatsApp networks in Chiswick have already mobilized DIY weeding efforts to keep their streets chemical-free.

Simple methods such as boiling water and salt have been shared locally as alternatives to chemical treatment. While there is no formal opt-out process, proactive weeding remains the only guaranteed way to avoid glyphosate application.

The decision to reintroduce glyphosate followed concerns about safety, infrastructure damage, and the high cost of manual weed removal. The council has stated that the programme will be reviewed again next year, and residents are encouraged to share feedback through local forums and area committees.
