Reward offered for local crime fighters

Do you know any "selfless community-minded people" who deserve thanks?

Residents who take a stand against crime in their community are set to be rewarded for their efforts to make the borough safer for everyone.

Hounslow Community Safety Partnership - a partnership including the council and police - are looking for nominations for the annual reward and recognition scheme.

This is a chance to recognise and thank those community-spirited people who are willing to stand up for their neighbours and tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in their area.

Cllr Paul Fisher, lead member community safety at the council, said:

“We are lucky to have so many selfless, community-minded, people in the borough who won’t just stand idly by and let their community be ruined by crime.

“Their motivation isn’t for praise or personal gain, but we all owe them our thanks and this is a chance to do that.

“So if you know someone who has given up their time on a project to help fight crime, or a local group which has worked with local police to make a difference, let us know.”

Previous winners include:

Laura Wood, who, along with local residents realised they had a problem of drug usage and dealing on their estate. Laura worked with Police to gather vital information regarding the premises and vehicles the dealers were using. She attended court and gave evidence to secure an eviction and crack house closure.

Janet Dhliweyo - a tenant monitor on her estate, she is the eyes and ears for her tenancy officer. Residents are happy to speak to Janet rather than contacting housing/police as they know she will enable to ensure that action is taken. She makes sure that housing officers are advised about any issues that arise on the estate and stands up to people she feels are acting wrongly.

Corporation Avenue Residents Assoc formed a neighbourhood watch group to tackle high levels of burglary, anti-social behaviour, fly tipping and vandalism. A small number of residents went round the whole estate and encouraged people to take a stand against the minority causing these problems. During this time the group realised that the majority of the problems were caused by the access to the alleys at the back of the properties, and after working together with police and council they arranged a clean up and secured funding for alley gates to be put in place, this has now resulted in the community being able to live 100 per cent burglary free

Jo Murray worked with residents around Inwood Park, which had  become a derelict and unapproachable place. There were continued reports of people using the park to consume alcohol which resulted in people being afraid to use the park due to the behaviour caused by these individuals. Jo worked with other residents to found the group Friends of Inwood Park. Jo and her husband Patrick took on the undertaking to lock and re-open the gates to the park daily to improve security. Her co-ordinated work with police and other partners to paint play equipment, clear undergrowth and refurbish the café ensured people could enjoy the park and feel safe and secure.

Nominations can be made between 4 - 29 January 2010, and judging takes place during the first week of February.
