London Living Wage rises
More than 1,000 people working for the council, or on its behalf, will benefit from a rise in the London Living Wage from next month.
The London Living Wage is calculated by the GLA based on the cost of living in the capital, and has risen from £8.55 to £8.80 an hour.
The council is one of only a handful of local authorities in London accredited by the Living Wage Foundation for its approach to fair pay for low wage employees.
Hounslow is also one of the few councils that require new contractors to pay the London Living Wage to their own staff and those working on their behalf.
Cllr Tom Bruce, cabinet member for education and HR at the council, said:
“We want to make sure people who work for us, or on our behalf, are taking home a fair wage for their day’s work.
“It’s also good for us and our contractors as it helps reduce the costs of recruiting and retaining staff, lowers staff absentee rates and improves the quality of work.
“Organisations that have introduced the London Living Wage have seen improvements in the services they provide so paying this wage should help increase the quality of service residents receive.”
Many of the 1,094 workers who will benefit from the increase work in schools in roles such as midday supervisors, cleaners and kitchen assistants, or as passenger escorts.
