A familiar face in local politics is seeking to make a comeback in the Reading area.

Hanif Khan launched a bid to become the Labour Party’s candidate for the new Earley and Woodley seat.

Having lead Hounslow transport policy through the pandemic, he wasn’t selected by the party locally in his Hanworth Park constituency for the 2022 local elections. He ended up contesting the Chiswick Gunnersbury constituency but lost out to his Conservative opponents.

However, should he be selected for the Westminster seat, his chances may be much better next time out. Independent polling company, Electoral Calculus put Labour’s chance of winning the seat at 82%

Although the area has traditionally voted Tory, with parts of the new seat formerly being part of Theresa May’s constituency, it is a Remain voting area with a relatively young population.

Mr Khan said, “I am thrilled to announce my candidacy for the ‘Earley and Woodley constituency seat.

“My journey is rooted in the values of hard work and a relentless commitment to making a positive impact.

“My father’s socialist ideals ignited my passion for bringing about change, and I owe a profound debt to my family’s sacrifices.

“I am fully engaged in the vibrant Earley and Woodley community, home to over 70,000 residents from diverse backgrounds.”

Mr Khan is a second-generation British Pakistani and a grandfather. He was spotted among community dignitaries for the celebration of Pakistan National Defence Day at the Pakistan Community Centre in East Reading in September.

Mr Khan served as councillor on Hounslow Council in London from 2014 to 2022.

He said, “I have eight years of experience as an elected councillor, working on the front bench in roles like Transport.

“I am chair of the Hounslow Co-operative Party – a part of Labour that works towards a more equal society.

“The cost-of-living crisis, rising mortgages, escalating rents, access to quality healthcare and schools, and environmental concerns are equally critical. Pollution in our rivers, exemplified by the state of the river Loddon, demands immediate attention: affordable public transportation and solutions to business rate inequalities, shop theft, and crime.

“I’m advocating for asylum seekers and refugees’ rights to work and vote, and supporting family carers.

“Our NHS requires proper investment and levelling up in our society.”

Mr Khan is aware of the emerging business climate in the constituency that was formed this summer, which covers , Shinfield, the Whitley and Church wards of Reading Borough and Sonning as well as Earley and Woodley.

He said, “I have run my business for over 20 years and understand the business opportunities available, Shinfield Studios, Winnersh Triangle, and Thames Valley Business Park, all growth areas with a massive potential for Earley and Woodley and bring about education, employment and entrepreneurship, which will encourage Reading students to stay here after graduating.

“I am a member of BECTU/Prospects and the Community Union who worked on a game-changing manifesto called the Progressive Manifesto Plan for Self-Employed people in the UK is transformative and something I firmly get behind.

“I pledge unwavering dedication to secure victory for Labour in the next General Election.

“Together, we’ll create a unique identity for Earley and Woodley, united as one strong Community; this is my commitment to you.”

Other candidates seeking nomination as Labour’s candidate include Cllr Rachel Eden who represents Whitley ward on the local council and councillor Annie Gallop, who represents Myatts Fields on Lambeth Council.

Members are expected to choose the successful candidate before Christmas.

Meanwhile, Cllr Pauline Jorgensen (Conservative, Hillside) was announced as her party’s candidate in the summer, and the Liberal Democrats are yet to announce their candidate.
