London MP Mary Macleod has welcomed recent good news on unemployment. The unemployment rate in London for the three months from April to June 2012 fell by 1.1% to 8.7%. The number of unemployed people fell by 42,000, to reach 366,000. Employment rose by 1.5%, with 99,000 more people in work in the capital.
This comes as the national rate of unemployment fell by 0.2%, with 46,000 fewer people unemployed.
Mary commented: “These are very encouraging figures. Unemployment is continuing to fall in London, which is testament to the Government’s efforts in encouraging investment and creating jobs. 99,000 more people are in work in London than in the last three months.
“I hope to see even more businesses in the future join the likes of International SOS and Aker Solutions in my constituency, supporting local jobs and creating growth and a stronger economy.”
“Our capital is having a fantastic summer as we in London celebrate the success of the Olympics and of our gold medallists, such as Mo Farah from Isleworth and Peter Reed from Chiswick. I am sure there will be more good news going forward as we build up to the Paralympic Games”.
