Reduced South West Trains Services From Wimbledon To London

Morning closure was caused by broken rail through platform 5

A broken rail outside Wimbledon Station today (Monday January 23) meant no South West Trains services were running from Wimbledon into London in the rush hour.

Emergency engineering works meant the London-bound suburban line was blocked, with South West Trains services running through the station being cancelled, delayed or running non stop between Surbiton and London Waterloo.

Disruption is expected all day, although the line through Wimbledon re-opened in the mid-morning.

The incident started around 4.20am during overnight engineering works when it was spotted that a rail had broken on the line through platform 5 at Wimbledon.

When the line through Wimbledon was re-opened by around 11am, trains were stillmunable to stop at Earlsfield.

If you're travelling to Wimbledon from the Surbiton area, you will need to travel to London Waterloo and use a return service to complete your journey.

If you're travelling from Wimbledon towards London, you can use alternative routes listed below, or travel towards Raynes Park/Surbiton and use return services towards Central London. 

Crowd control measures had to be put in place at Clapham Junction station this morning due to overcrowding.

As from 11am until the end of day, the following train alterations will be in place:

• Services from Guildford (via Cobham and Stoke d'Abernon) to London Waterloo will run NON-STOP Surbiton to London Waterloo
• Services from Woking to London Waterloo will run NON-STOP Surbiton to London Waterloo
• Services from Shepperton to London Waterloo will be cancelled in both directions 
• All other suburban services will once again CALL at Vauxhall and Earlsfield.

South West Trains said in an earlier statement: “It will be necessary to implement a speed limit of 5mph over the broken rail in order to keep trains safe, and this is expected to cause significant disruption to services through platform 5 this morning. 

“This platform is used by our stopping services to London Waterloo, and with frequencies of around 12 trains an hour through this platform, we have had to take significant steps to minimise the disruption to our train service. We're very sorry for the disruption to your journey this morning.”
