Grant award to transform local cycling
Plans to make Wimbledon a more cycle-friendly town centre are moving forward after a grant award of £200,000.
Earlier this year, Merton missed out on being selected for full 'mini-Holland' status when Mayor of London Boris Johnson selected three other Outer London boroughs to receive funding to transform cycling in their area.
But the judges were impressed with Merton's application for a Wimbledon town centre scheme, and said it would work with it to take forward “substantial” parts of its bid to improve cycle routes and facilities.
Now the Mayor and Transport for London (TfL) have awarded the borough £200,000 towards improving cycling conditions in Wimbledon Town Centre as part of its Local Implementation Plan (LIP).
Merton Council will look at the best ways to spend this funding to make cycling as safe and convenient for everyone, including children and families.
Ideas the council will continue to develop with residents and businesses include installing segregated cycle lanes, cycle priority at busy junctions and rejuvenating existing underused alleyways to link up different parts of the borough with cycle ways.
Merton Council's cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration Councillor Andrew Judge said: "We are very pleased to be benefitting from this funding and are committed to making cycling safe and convenient for everyone.
"We will be looking at a range of options to provide an excellent cycling infrastructure in Wimbledon that complements the needs of all our road users. We will also be speaking to residents and businesses about our ideas."
