Open top bus tour through the village and town centre
Cheering fans lined the streets of Wimbledon on Sunday (July 3) to celebrate AFC Wimbledon’s promotion to League One.
An open top bus carrying the first team squad and management as well as the Mayor of Merton and Merton Council’s Leader paraded through the packed streets of Wimbledon, where they were met with a sea of blue and yellow.
It toured from Wimbledon Village to the town centre, where the Piazza in The Broadway (right) was packed with cheering fans who turned out to congratulate their club.
Captain Barry Fuller and manager Neil Ardley held the League Two play-off trophy aloft to the delight of onlookers.
The victory parade was followed by the launch of AFC Wimbledon’s new kit in Centre Court Shopping Centre.
In a speech made at the event, Merton Council’s Leader Councillor Stephen Alambritis called on new Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to approve the plans to bring the Dons home.
The council unanimously approved the stadium in December 2015, but it was ‘called in’ by former Mayor Boris Johnson before the May election.
