Brentford FC have pulled off a major coup by signing Christian Eriksen from Inter Milan.
The player, who was ranked as one of the best in the world before collapsing due to cardiac arrest at last year’s Euros, is joining on a six month contract.
He is being reunited with fellow Dane and Brentford’s head coach, Thomas Frank who said, “I am looking forward to working with Christian again. It has been a while since I last coached him, and a lot has happened since then. Christian was 16 at the time and has become one of the best midfield players to appear in the Premier League. He has also won trophies all over Europe and become the star of the Danish national team.
“We have taken an unbelievable opportunity to bring a world class player to Brentford. He hasn’t trained with a team for seven months but has done a lot of work on his own. He is fit but we will need to get him match fit and I am looking forward to seeing him work with the players and staff to get back towards his highest level.”
The 29-year-old has had an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) installed which controls his heart rhythm and detects a malignant arrhythmia. In some countries such as Italy, where he had been playing for Inter Milan, and Spain he would not be passed medically fit to play but he can do in the English Premier League. His target is to represent Denmark in the World Cup in Qatar later this year. His last game for them was on 12 June against Finland when he collapsed.
Eriksen became a free agent after his contract with Inter Milan was terminated by mutual consent last month.
He has played previously in England having made over 300 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur between 2013 and 2020.
He has only recently received his Covid-19 vaccination and will not be able to start training with Brentford for over a week.
This concluded a successful transfer window for Brentford who also signed contract extensions with Thomas Frank and key players such as Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Norgaard and Pontus Jansson.
