London Fire Brigade has issued renewed safety advice following a fire breaking out in a Brentford tower block which it believes was started by a candle.
The first call was received from occupants of a neighbouring flat on the eleventh floor at 9.26pm on Friday 19 January after they heard a smoke alarm.
Five fire engines and around 35 firefighters from Richmond, Heston, Southall and Fulham fire stations were sent to the scene at the 21-storey building on Green Dragon Lane.
The fire was under control within half an hour and no injuries were reported.
Fire investigators believe the cause of the fire was accidental and due to a lit candle left unattended.
This is the second fire in the Brentford area attributed to an unattended candle, the other being an incident in Ferry Lane last September.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said, “Keep candles well away from any objects that can catch fire and away from pets and children.
“Consider using battery-powered, flameless LED candles instead, which are safe even if you fall asleep. Whilst they may cost more upfront than traditional candles, they will last considerably longer, giving you better value for money.
“If you do choose to use traditional candles ensure you place them in a heat-resistant holder, on a stable surface where they won’t be knocked over and away from materials that could catch fire. Never leave them unattended around your home, take particular care with children and pets and blow them out properly before you go to bed.
“The Brigade’s online Home Fire Safety Checker can guide you around your home and provide you with specific advice to reduce fire risks.”
Firefighters’ candle safety tips
Make sure you put out any candles, incense and oil burners when you leave the room and especially before bed.
Place candles, incense and oil burners in heat-resistant holders and placed on a stable surface where they won't be knocked over.
Keep them away from materials that might catch fire - that's things like curtains, furniture, clothes and hair.
Be aware that tea lights get very hot and without proper holders can melt through plastic surfaces like a TV or bath.
LED candles can be a great alternative - they're safe even if you fall asleep or forget to blow them out.
