Eyewitnesses to a chaotic scene in Ealing this weekend said it was a miracle there were no fatalities after a car was driven into a crowd of pedestrians.

At around 2:29pm on Saturday 27 June, at the crossing opposite the Marks and Spencer store on Ealing Broadway, a white Seat was driven at speed towards people waiting to cross the road. A number of people were hit by the car which then attempted to reverse while being surrounded by passersby who tried to open the car doors and smash the windows with some throwing water bottles at the vehicles. The Seat also hit and damaged two cars going in the opposite direction.

Despite these efforts the driver managed to drive away but was quickly located by the police nearby at Grange Park, a residential road near Ealing Common. Video footage shows a man being removed from the car and held on the ground.

Emergency services, including London’s Air Ambulance helicopter, attended within minutes. Five people were injured: two were treated at the scene, and three were taken to hospital, where their injuries were confirmed to be non-life-threatening and non-life-changing.

One local business owner said, “It was absolute carnage and I am amazed and delighted that nobody was killed, I really thought I was looking at a mass-casualty event.

34-year-old Timir Ahmed Mohamed, who lives on Grange Park, has since been charged with the attempted murder of five people as well as dangerous driving, failing to stop, failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis and criminal damage. Mohamed, who is a Somalia-born British man, has been remanded in custody and appeared at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Monday 29 June.

The junction was closed off by police for several hours on Saturday afternoon

The police have confirmed that they are not treating the incident as terrorism despite the earlier involvement of officers from Counter Terrorism Policing London in the investigation.

Police are appealing for witnesses and any relevant footage. Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting reference 4607/27JUN.
