A member of staff at Ealing Broadway station has received the MBE in the King’s New Year’s honours list.

33-year-old Rizwan Javed, who lives in East London, is an employee of the MTR Elizabeth line who has been credited with preventing 29 people from taking their own lives.

He attended a course given by The Samaritans nearly a decade ago which taught him how to approach people in despair and he has used these skills to identify vulnerable people and persuade them to come away from the tracks. It is believed that the first life he saved was back in 2015 when he was working for Great Western Railway just two days after he received the training.

Mr Javed said, "They basically teach you key skills of how to identify vulnerable people, what sort of conversations to have with them and how to take them to a point of safety.”

He had already received a Samaritans Lifesaver Award for his work which has seen him help people of all ages.

He added, "Coming from an Asian background, they're not really educated about mental health.

"If you're going through mental health issues your mother [will] probably give you a paracetamol and say you'll be OK in the morning.

"So a lot of stuff like that, breaking that barrier and getting people to talk about mental health, whether it's at work or at home, has been a coping mechanism for myself."

Another person with a local connection to receive an MBE was Lady Julia Walport who used to run the Ealing Youth Orchestra.
