HEALTH & SAFETY EMERGENCY  HOUNSLOW COUNCIL'S CUSTOMER SERVICE RESPONSE

My daugther is a council tenant and has an emergency, by this I mean that the glass light fitting has fallen from her bathroom ceiling and is dangling by the Electrical Wiring as it has done since early this morning. Council Workmen were obviously inept in the first place seeing that instead of the Light Fitting being correctly attached it was actaully stuck onto the Ceiling. My daugther rang Hounslow Customer Services this morning to register the Health & Safety Emergency and was told that yes! it would be treated as an Emergency however because it was to be treated as such there would be a time frame of 48 Hours BUT!!! no actual time was given we have taken turns today to sit in and wait for the Maintenance person all to no avail. My daughter's a Widow of 18 Month's with a young child and chooses to work instead of getting Social Benefits. Consequently she phoned customer services this evening to explain that we had waited in all day but she had to now go back to work until 8.30( my grandaugther is at this moment in our lounge doing her homework) she did not and neither did I expect the woman who answered her call this evening to say that it all depended on what she considered a prority. Putting bread on ones table is priority enough, this young women needs to be sent on a course on how to deal with customer service requests politely and sympathetically not with condescension. What do our Council consider an EMERGENCY? just supposing the fitting had fallen or was to fall onto either my daughter's head or my grandaughter - what would their reaction have been?Mr & Mrs Councillor's you need to be aware of how your staff are demeaning the Council and make them aware that an Emergency should be treated as such and sorted out A.S.A.P. Both our daughter and grandaughter have had there showers around our house today and will also it would seem tomorrow.

Thames Tunnel and Mogden

I've finally got round to glancing at the proposals for the Thames Tunnel (mentioned on the Forum front page and details of consultation athttp://www.thamestunnelconsultation.co.uk/            )Obviously I haven't been keeping up because I thought that it was going to be the answer to the problem of Mogden sewahge works overflowing into the Thames, carrying the surplus downstream to Beckton. The plans show it is only going to go as far west as the Acton storm tanks. So if Mogden overflows, sewage will still go into the river to kill the fish, poison the rowers and make Brentford smell. After that surprise google then found for me the minutes of the March 2009 meeting athttp://democraticservices.hounslow.gov.uk/%28S%28to3ted35c21nxr55eb24vind%29%29/mgAi.aspx?ID=44727where the Sustainable Development C'tee were discussing the Mogden expansion proposals. As I skimmed them it seemed to imply that Thames Water reckoned the larger capacity would reduce the frequency of discharges :"Mr Aylard  explained that the flow into the works was not constant and more arrived at the works after it rained, which had to be treated, stored or discharged into the river rather than allowing it to back up. The proposal would provide a new treatment stream, which would increase and improve capacity by approximately one third for better treatment of the sewage. The proposals would not bring any more sewage to Modgen and discharge into the river would go down to approximately once a year." The minutes record "Councillor Dakers asked why the Thames Tunnel could not be extended to Mogden and used for overflow. " and got the response "The Tunnel was only a long thin storage tank and it needed to be a certain size to work properly. The furthest the tunnel would go upstream was to Chiswick Ait. Heavy rainfall and sewage would go into the Tunnel and on to Beckton, where it was pumped out. The Tunnel could not be extended because the cost benefit analysis did not allow for the extra four miles to Mogden. "If Mogden is the major source of the problem and the place where the storm water from the sewers of most of North and West London ends up, it doesn't seem satisfactory to continue to let it annually poison the Thames while Thames Water spend the money on a greenwash PR campaign to fund an expensive "long thin storage tank" that won't solve the problem.Or has anyone seen the figures to convince themselve that it will all work happily ?

Reisdents launch LBH Watch

A powerful new resident-led monitoring body has been launched with a view to highlighting and addressing some of the major flaws in the Civic Centre bureaucracy that came to be identified during the last days of the previous council administration.Endless battles at IBAC (Isleworth & Brentford Area Committee) between elected councillors and intransigent and belligerent Chief Officers revealed some very fundamental deficiencies in the member-officer relationship in Hounslow. ICG councillors in particular encountered a metaphorical brick wall when attempting to open up the process of local government and to introduce more accountability and openness.Delivering its launch statement, LBH Watch Chair Ian Speed emphasised that the new body enjoyed cross-party support, and its current members were drawn from all across the local political spectrum. The full statement reads:"Following the local elections at which all community and third party representation on Hounslow council was wiped out and replaced with a classic two party system only, a group of concerned residents have formed to address any democratic or performance deficits the London Borough of Hounslow may have in administering or delivering its services in your area. The issue that has caught the imagination of most members of the group is Planning, as administered by the Environment & Planning Department and the local Area and council wide Strategic Development Committees. However, we would be very happy to hear from any citizen who has concerns about the way LB Hounslow delivers or administers its services."We are in the process of designing a website with the following key elements:    * A High level section for borough wide issues such as Customer Service standards.    * The key contentious isssues for each of the Area Committees (mainly planning issues and traffic management).    * A self-help section giving residents a guide as to whom to write to or complain to if they are not happy about the way a service is being delivered or administered."We would be interested in hearing from any member of the Hounslow Borough Community who would like to contribute concerns via email or attend one of our meetings. The next meeting is on the evening of Monday 2nd August."We have created an email address at lbhwatch@aol.com. Please email us or text/leave a message on 07835 379595 if you wish to attend a meeting."LBH Watch has also published a list of six Aims and Objectives, which are as follows:    * We believe Hounslow council services should be run according to best practice within the law.    * We believe council officers, however senior, should be fully answerable to councillors and local residents and taxpayers.    * We believe in greater democratic leadership and outward accountability for decision-making to local people.    * We believe that council staff and members should respond to residents' concerns in a prompt, honest and comprehensive manner and act with impeccable integrity at all times.    * We believe Hounslow council services should be delivered as transparently and cost-effectively as possible.    * We encourage members and officers to adhere to the spirit of the Motion on Community Empowerment as approved unanimously by the previous council."The range of talents and expertise that LBH Watch is already able to call upon is quite simply vast. It will use every means available to highlight bad practice and to bring answerability and transparency to our local government.I envisage LBH Watch playing a seminal role in ensuring that the concerns of the community are heard during the four years of the current council administration and maybe beyond.
