Council prepare for controversial new rubbish system

Ealing Council's hoping to avoid problems other boroughs have encountered by launching a roadshow to introduce residents to the new wheelie bins.

Whilst there are expected to be a few teething problems as residents adjust to the new system, the council isn't anticipating a major rebellion - as witnessed in neighbouring Brentford.

The first opportunity to meet the wheelies is at the Ealing Broadway shopping centre on Tuesday, 12 April where a special stall will be set up in the square outside Tesco from 11.30am to 4.30pm.

Residents are invited to look at the new bins, talk to council officers about how the new service will work and get expert advice on how to recycle more.

The roadshows will continue throughout April and in to May:

Greenford Broadway, next to Iceland	21 April	11.30am – 4pm
Northolt Leisure Centre	23 April	11am- 4pm
Waitrose, West Ealing	26 April	11.30am- 4pm
Lidl, Southall Broadway, opposite Southall police station	28 April	11.30am- 5pm
Ealing Broadway shopping centre, outside Tesco	7 May	11am- 5pm

 

Most of the borough will move to the new recycling and rubbish collection system from Monday, 6 June. Rubbish and recycling will be collected from wheelie bins on alternate weeks, rubbish one week and recycling the next. Food waste will continue to be collected weekly.

Letters are being sent to 95,000 properties in the borough with information on how the new service will work. The council has also set up a Facebook page to keep residents informed and give useful tips on how to recycle more. Wheelie bins will start to be delivered to households in May.

Keith Townsend, executive director for environment and customer services, said:

''I know that a lot of residents want to do the right thing and recycle more and, based on the experiences of other London boroughs, the move to wheelie bins should help to achieve this. We are committed to keeping residents up to date about the upcoming changes and these roadshows will help to keep residents informed. I hope that local people will pop along on one of the dates, say hello and see the wheelies for themselves.''
