Historian, novelist and former soldier Charles Cordell has written two Civil War novels, the first instalments of a trilogy. God’s Vindictive Wrath, published in 2022, ends with the Battle of Brentford, while his sequel, The Keys of Hell and Death, was published in the summer of 2024.
This Monday (21 October) he is the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Brentford & Chiswick Local History Society.
In his presentation he will share his background, his historical research, the inspiration he has found in the General Crisis of the 17th century and its echoes today, and the local relevance of his characters and story lines.
There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion and the society promises a lively event. Charles Cordell’s books will be available to buy at £8.99 on the evening and he will be happy to sign copies.
This will be an in-person event at the Chiswick Memorial Club, Bourne Place, W4, and it will also be offered via Zoom. There is no charge to join the audience but if you want to take part on-line, reserve your place via Ticket Tailor.
The talk begins at 7.30pm at the usual venue of the Chiswick Memorial Club, Bourne Place, (W4 2EL).
The day before this talk (Sunday 20 October) you can join Charles Cordell and Simon Marsh to explore the November 1642 battles of Brentford (10.30am Market Place) & Turnham Green (2.00pm at tube station).

Monday 18 November - The Sanderson Design Group Homecoming: Voysey, Sanderson & Chiswick. The Sanderson & Sons Wallpaper Factory, designed by architect CFA Voysey, was completed in 1902. Newly renovated, this iconic landmark has welcomed back the Sanderson Design Group in 2024. Archive Manager, Caitlin Stracey, will explore the links between the Sandersons and Voysey, and between the firm and Chiswick.
Monday 16 December - The Temples of Industry Project: Firestone, Trico & AEC - An illustrated talk by Ishwari Giga, Curator at Gunnersbury Park Museum, who grew up locally. Passionate about social history and contemporary curating, she coordinated this project, funded by Historic England. Volunteers, former workers and young film-makers together assembled the content for new web pages to show how the decline of heavy industry shaped West London.
Membership of the Brentford & Chiswick Local History Society ensures that you receive details of the Society’s programme of talks and outings and entitles you to a copy of the annual Journal. From time to time there are opportunities to join a small research group or assist with a local history project.
Meetings, usually on the third Monday of the month, take place at Chiswick Memorial Club, Bourne Place, off Dukes Avenue opposite Chiswick Library. The membership year runs from January to December and the annual subscription costs £9.00.
