Transport for London (TfL) are seeking public's views on proposed changes to a section of the A406 North Circular from Chiswick Roundabout to Popes Lane. The transport company says it is responding to the high number of collisions and near misses observed on the A406 Gunnersbury Avenue between Chiswick Roundabout and Popes Lane.

The consultation is open until March 17th 2016.

The changes would involve the construction of a central reservation to prevent right turning collisions at side roads and vehicles using the oncoming lanes to overtake.

A 30mph speed limit would be introduced on this section of the road, where there is already a northbound and southbound safety (speed) camera.

As well as the installation of a central reservation, they are proposing to improve the existing cycle and pedestrian facilities along this section of the A406. Other elements of the proposals, including wider footways, are designed to improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists in the area.

A summary of all of the proposed changes:
Install a central reservation that would connect the existing central reservation at the approach to Chiswick Roundabout with another beginning at the turn off for Park Way. Right turns would not be possible to and from adjoining roads and road-side properties on the northbound or southbound carriageway, but would still be permitted at either Chiswick Roundabout or the turning facility adjacent to Park Place Drive

Reduce the speed limit between Popes Lane and Chiswick Roundabout from 40mph to 30mph to improve safety and provide consistency with adjoining sections of the A406 Gunnersbury Avenue

Improve cycle and pedestrian facilities by:

Widening the existing shared footways on the eastern side of the carriageway.Widening the existing two-way segregated cycle track on the western side of the carriageway to provide sufficient space for pedestrians and cycles

Widening the footway on Larch Drive and a short section of the northbound A406, and adjusting the position of the traffic island to provide sufficient space for shared pedestrian and cycle use

Review the condition and position of the existing trees and where necessary replace or plant new ones. There would be no overall reduction in the number of trees

Subject to the results of this consultation, construction could start in early 2017.

TfL says it would seek to coordinate all necessary construction works with those already underway to replace the existing pedestrian and road bridge at Power Road with one single structure. All disruption will be kept to a minimum.
