A Brentford shop owner has been convicted for selling alcohol to a child for the second time in three years, following a Trading Standards test purchase that again found the business failing to carry out legally required age checks.
The former owner of Trishul Groceries was found guilty at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on 8 September after a 15-year-old volunteer was able to buy alcohol during a 2025 test purchase operation. No attempt whatsoever was made by the person serving to check the volunteer’s age. It was a repeat offence: in 2024, the same premises at 2–6 Clayponds Lane, sold alcohol to another 15-year-old, resulting in a guilty plea and financial penalties totalling £1,324.
The owner has since sold the business, but the latest conviction resulted in a further £4,578.20 in penalties, comprising an £807 fine, a £223 victim surcharge and £3,548.20 in prosecution costs.
Councillor Amy Croft, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Enforcement and Recycling, said the case underlines the seriousness of selling age-restricted products to children. “Businesses that sell alcohol have a legal responsibility to ensure age-restricted products do not end up in the hands of children,” she said. “Selling alcohol to underage people can put young people at risk and have wider impacts on our communities. This case sends a clear message that we will take robust action against retailers who repeatedly fail to uphold their responsibilities.”
Hounslow Council’s Trading Standards team regularly carries out test purchases to prevent underage access to alcohol, tobacco and vaping products. Residents concerned about illegal sales can report issues via Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 or online at citizensadvice.org.uk.
