Residents riverside clean-up

Forum idea becomes reality - volunteers sought

BrentfordTW8 forum contributor Nigel Moore is organising a clear-up of the river-front by Watermans Park, and is calling on other residents to come and lend a hand.

The idea was first suggested on our forum at the end of August. Interest was strong and the clean-up day will be Saturday 16th October from 12.30 to 2.30. There's the added incentive of a barbeque, hosted by Nigel in his boatyard later that afternoon - but only for those who've been helping!

Anybody who is interested in helping out is asked to mail Nigel at nigelmoore5002@hotmail.com.

Hounslow’s Environmental Strategy Officer, Lucy Griffiths, welcomed the initiative, which is supported by the Council’s Local Agenda 21 programme.

“This stretch of the river is home to a thriving community of local wildlife, including two rare breeds of snail: the two-lipped door snail and the German hairy snail, but it has become very polluted.

“The problem is that when the river becomes clogged by the accumulation of litter and other debris, it poses a serious health hazard to the local wildlife, as well as making the area look untidy.

"It’s very encouraging to see local community groups and businesses working together to improve the area, and hope this weekend’s initiative will be as successful as previous river clean-ups."
