London Road Bus Priority Scheme and Resurfacing 26/2- 13/3

LONDON ROAD (SYON LANE TO BRENT LEA) BUS/CYCLE SCHEME COMPLETION and RESURFACING OF LONDON ROAD (BUSCH CORNER TO COMMERCE ROAD)As loacl resdeints and road users will no doubt be aware, the London Borough of Hounslow has been implementing a major bus priority and cycling improvements scheme on London Road between Syon Lane and Brent Lea.  The scheme includes an eastbound bus lane, a westbound cycle lane and provision of pedestrian safety improvements including raised entry treatments at side road junctions.  The scheme is funded by Transport for London.Completion of the scheme was delayed last year by problems encountered by Thames Water and BT, who had difficulty in relocating or protecting their buried water and telecoms services, which were affected by the carriageway widening associated with the scheme.  The diversion of these services has now been completed and the carriageway and footway are currently being reinstated.  We have programmed the resurfacing of London Road to take place at the end of the above works, in order to prevent the new carriageway surface being disrupted again.  London Road will now be resurfaced from Busch Corner through to Commerce Road junction.  Due to the volume of traffic on this road, and as required by Transport for London, this work will be done overnight, on weeknights, commencing at 8pm each evening and finishing at 4am approximately.  The resurfacing will commence at Busch Corner on Tuesday 26 February and will progress eastwards over the next 12 weeknights.  While every effort will be made to restrict the noisiest elements of this work to the 8pm-11pm period, it is inevitable that some noise will be experienced overnight by local residents. The Engineer in charge of the resurfacing project is Mr Sonny Pham, who may be contacted on 020 8583 4906 or at sonny.pham@hounslow.gov.ukOn behalf of the London Borough of Hounslow, I offer my apologies for the delays in completing the bus and cycling scheme, and for any inconvenience experienced by local residents and businesses while London Road is being resurfaced.  I have written to about 600 households and businesses along London Road and surrounding streets to give them the above information and apologies.Chris Calvi-FreemanHead of TransportLB Hounslow

Friday funny

BIBLE SALESIf this doesn't make you laugh just go ahead and close your casket!!!A pastor concluded that his church was getting into very serious financial troubles. While checking the church storeroom, he discovered several cartons of new bibles that had never been opened and distributed. So at his Sunday sermon, he asked for three volunteers from the congregation who would be willing to sell the bibles door-to-door for $10 each to raise the desperately needed money for the church.Jack, Paul and Louie all raised their hands to volunteer for the task. The minister knew that Jack and Paul earned their living as salesmen and were likely capable of selling some bibles. But he had serious doubts about Louie who was a local farmer, who had always kept to himself because he was embarrassed by his speech impediment. Poor Louis stuttered badly. But, NOT WANTING TO discourage Louis, theminister decided to let him try anyway. He sent the three of them away with the back seat of their cars stacked with bibles. He asked them to meet with him and report the results of their door-to-door selling efforts the following Sunday.Anxious to find out how successful they were, the minister immediately asked Jack, "Well, Jack, how did you make out selling our bibles last week?"Proudly handing the reverend an envelope, Jack replied, "Using my sales prowess, I was able to sell 20 bibles, and here's the $200 I collected on behalf of the church.""Fine job, Jack!" The minister said, vigorously shaking his hand. "You are indeed a fine salesman and the Church is indebted to you."Turning to Paul, "And Paul, how many bibles did you sell for the Church last week?"Paul, smiling and sticking out his chest, confidently replied, "I am a professional salesman. I sold 28 bibles on behalf of the church, and here's $280 I collected."The minister responded, "That's absolutely splendid, Paul. You are truly a professional salesman and the church is indebted to you."Apprehensively, the minister turned to Louie and said, "And Louie, did you manage to sell any bibles last week?" Louie silently offered the minister a large envelope. The minister opened it and counted the contents. "What is this?" the minister exclaimed. "Louie, there's $3200 in here! Are you suggesting that you sold 320 bibles for the church, door to door, in just one week?"Louie just nodded. That's impossible!" both Jack and Paul said in unison. "We are professional salesmen, yet you claim to have sold 10 times as many bibles as we could.""Yes, this does seem unlikely," the minister agreed. "I think you'd better explain how you managed to accomplish this, Louie."Louie shrugged. "I-I-I re-re-really do-do-don't kn-kn-know f-f-f-for sh-sh-sh-sure," he stammered.Impatiently, Peter interrupted. "For crying out loud, Louie, just tell us what you said to them when they answere the door!""A-a-a-all I-I-I s-s-said wa-wa-was," Louis replied, "W-w-w-w-would y-y-y-you l-l-l-l-l-like t-t-to b-b-b-buy th-th-th-this b-b-b-b-bible F-f-for t-t-ten b-b-b-bucks ---o-o-o-or--- wo-wo-would yo-you j-j-j-just l-like m-m-me t-t-to st-st-stand h-h-here and r-r-r-r-r-read it t-to y-y-you??"

Mary Macleod's Meeting on Heathrow Expansion 21st February 2008

Mary Macleod, the Brentford & Isleworth Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, is organising a community meeting for residents on the expansion of Heathrow, due to local demand to discuss an issue that will greatly affect their quality of life.Mary Macleod is a strong opponent of Heathrow Expanision. The meeting will be held on Thursday 21st February at 7.30pm in the Isleworth Working Men’s Club, St John’s Road, Isleworth (near Twickenham Road junction).  All residents of Chiswick, Brentford, Isleworth, Osterley and Hounslow are invited.Mary commented, “The government is currently consulting with residents on plans for massive expansion at Heathrow airport by building a third runway, a sixth terminal and ending runway alternation.  Aircraft noise will be worse than ever as flight numbers will increase by more than 50% and residents will lose the current half day’s relief from aircraft flying over their homes and schools.  This is our chance to make our views heard before this flawed consultation process ends on 27th February.  We must keep up the fight.”The meeting will be chaired by Mary Macleod and speakers include John Stewart (Chairman of HACAN), Cllr Barbara Reid (Hounslow Council’s lead member for aviation) and Roger Wiltshire (Secretary General of the British Air Transport Association).Ann Keen MP, Lord Soley (Future Heathrow) and Mark Bullock (BAA) have also been invited to attend and speak.Everyone welcome!

27th February 2008 is the Closing Date for Objections to Heathrow Expansion

We all have our own reasons for opposing Heathrow Expansion but here is a sample letter. To: heathrowconsultation@dft.gsi.gov.ukDear Secretary of State,I wish to express my opposition to any expansion at or of London Heathrow Airport.I am particularly concerned  regarding  the increased carbon emissions, increased aircraft noise and increased pollution that the building of a Third Runaway would cause not only in the London area, but elsewhere in the world. The Government's plans to expand Heathrow are directly contrary to the Government's objectives for achieving carbon dioxide emission reductions. In addition, the plans will cause gridlock on the M4 and M25 and draw more aircraft and vehicle traffic into London and the south-East of England.I am also very concerned about the effect that the Government's proposals will have on the areas surrounding Heathrow and in particular the destruction of the communities of Sipson and Harmondsworth.I am also opposed to the ending of runaway alteration, the proposal to end the Cranford Agreement which prevents flights taking off to the East from the Northern Runaway and the continuance of night flights. The Government's document "Adding Capacaity at Heathrow" is difficult to understand and to respond to. However I remain unconvinced by the case put by the Government or by anyone else for the Expansion of Heathrow. The Government has failed to convince me and many millions of others that there is a sound environmental or economic argument for expanding Heathrow.I wish my objection to be formally noted.Yours sincerelyName and address.

Destruction of Communities by Labour Government

Here in Brentford and Chiswick we are concerned about the noise, the pollution and the possible danger of a 3rd Runaway and Terminal 6. As you get closer to Heathrow these concerns become more acute.Today we drove out to Sipson and Harmondsworth to visit the local communities threatened with destruction by the Labour Government's plans for Heathrow. These communities lie to the North of the current flight path and are therefore probably not currently as badly affected by noise as Hatton, Cranford and Bedfont immediately to the East of the currrent runaways. However if Runway 3 and Terminal 6 are built, these two communities of Harmondsworth and Sipson will be destroyed.Their residents will lose their homes. The villages of Sipson and Harmondsworth will be destroyed along with their pubs, shops and historic buildings.these are real villages with houses, shops, schools, pubs and shops and not suburbs.Ironically many of the residents have worked or are still working at the airport which is now going to destroy their homes and communities. In particular, the beautiful parish church of St Mary the Virgin, which has stood on the same site in Harmondsworth since 1067, is under threat, along with its churchyard, parish hall and vicarage.Even if this wonderful and historic parish church is allowed to survive, it will be enclosed within the Heathrow Airport perimter- cut off from the communities and people it serves. We  spoke to the new Vicar of Harmondsworth, Rev. Canon Amatu Christian-Igwuagwu, who has recently arrived in the village with his wife Princess and four very young children. Rev Canon Amatu expressed his amazement that England was prepared to destroy its heritage by extending an airport into such a historic area.

Rally against Heathrow Expansion Westminster 25th February 2008

Last night's meeting organised by HACAN at Methodist Central Hall, Westminster was a great success. The massive hall was filled to capacity. Standing room only for latecomers and a second hall had to be opened up to accommodate the overflow. The main speakers repeated their speeches to the people in the second hall. The speakers represented a wide range of parties, organisations and individuals with the conspicious exception that neither the Labour Government nor BAA nor BA or the aviation industry were represented.Hounslow Conservative Councillor Barbara Reid spoke first with a eloquent and comprehensive summary of the all-party opposition to Heathrow Expansion as broadly expressed by Hounslow Council and the other members of the 2M Group of Councils. She is now recognised as being a leader of the opposition to Heathrow Expansion not only but across London and beyond.Hounslow and Spring Grove Ward can be proud of her.Barbara was followed by Nick Clegg MP, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Justine Greening, Conservative MP for Putney, Susan Kramer, Liberal Democrat MP for Richmond, Vince Cable, Liberal Democrat MP for Twickenham,Sarah Ludford, Liberal Democrat MEP, Carol - a representative from the Stop Stanstead Expansion campaign, Brian Paddick the Lib Dem Mayoral candidate representing all 4 Mayoral candidates, Anita Goldsmith of Greenpeace, Caroline Lucas Green Party MEP, John McDonnell, Labour MP for Hayes and Hillingdon, Peter Ainsworth MP, the Conservative Shadow Spokesman for the Environment and a very eloquent Middlesex lady called Christine from the No Third Runaway Group representing the residents of Sipson and Harmondsworth whose homes, schools, shops and communities are going to be destroyed. There were video speeches from Boris Johnson MP, the Conservative Candidate for Mayor of London, Sian Berry, the Green Party Candidate for Mayor of London and from the present Mayor of London. There were a number of very good and varied speeches from the floor. A member of the audience described eloquently how the expansion would involve the removal of his family graves from the ancient graveyard at St Mary The Virgin, Harmondsworth.Others spoke about the national and international necessity to take radical steps to limit Climate Change. All MP's and MEP's present were given the opportunity to speak. All the speeches were against Heathrow Expansion. So it appaers, was everyone there although no doubt the Labour Government, the BAA, BA, Future Hounslo and the pro-expansion trade unions had their spies in the audience. Certainly when I passed around a bucket for donations, there were some prosperous looking men in suits who refused to donate. The proceedings were ably chaired by Jenny Tonge, the President of HACAN and former Lob Dem MP for Richmond. The final very fine speech  was given by John Stewart the veteran campaigner and Chair of HACAN.The well considered and clear opposition to Heathrow Expansion expressed by Peter Ainsworth, the Shadow Secretary of State for the Environment, left us in no doubt that if we elect a Conservative Government, there will be no further expansion at Heathrow. His was politically the most significant speech of the evening because he was speaking on behalf of the party which is now 11 points ahead of Labour in the opinion polls and likely to form the Government after the next General Election.Evidently Alan Keen MP and Ann Keen MP were in the audience at the beginning of the meeting but they left fairly early and did not speak either at the main meeting or at the second overflow meeting.Evidently there was a vote in the House Of Commons yesterday evening but that did not deter other much more important and senior MP's such as Peter Ainsworth and Nick Clegg from speaking. Having never heard either of the Keens speak on this subject I was very disappointed as I was really curious to know what they would have said.On the way home on the tube, I met Michael Meacher MP, the former Labour Secretary of State for the Environment and gave him a copy of the 2M Group's leaflet "Two Million Voices". He took it from me with a wry smile !Let's hope he speaks out against Heathrow Expansion also.Today is the last day we can make our objections known to heathrowconsultation@dft.gsi.gov.uk

Socialism in One Family

Josef Stalin believed in Socialism in One Country -Russia.Russia is no longer a Socialist Contry as envisaged by Stalin. Thank goodness for that !There is at least one family in this country that seems to have done quite well out of Socialism in One Family.Ann Keen is the MP for Brentford and Isleworth. Ann Keen's husband Alan is also an MP. That is well known. Alan Keen MP evidently employs one of his sons.Ann Keen and Alan Keen both claim Additional Costs Allowance on a taxpayer funded second home in Central London even though they have a home in Brentford within 10 miles of the House of Commons.Ann Keen's sister Sylvia Heal is also an MP.Ann Keen's cousin Lady Glynis Kinnock is an MEP.Her salary is £61,820 per annum but her expenses are secret in accordance with the rules of the European Parliament.MEP's are paid £125,000 a year for office expense but do not have to account for how this is spent.Ann Keen's cousin's husband Lord Neil Kinnock is Chair of the British Council, former EU Commissioner and former Leader of the Labour Party and former MP.This will  entitle him to a number of generous pensions.Ann Keen's cousin Glynis Kinnock's son Stephen until recently at least was (and maybe still is) the head of the British Council in St Petersburg, Russia and therefore employed by the British Government organisation chaired by his father, Lord Kinnock. He has recently had some problems with the Russian authorities but, there again, many do and he cannot be blamed for that and who his parents are.Stalin believed in Socialism in One Country -Russia.The Keens and the Kinnocks may not believe in Socialism any more (after all who does ?) but they have certainly done quite well out of supporting Socialism in One Family.
