Brentford 2 Millwall 2
John Bostock scored two goals on his bees debut on loan from Tottenham. The 17 year old was playing his first ever 90 minutes apparently and produced a man of the match display in a much improved, all-round performance from Brentford.
In an exciting and very entertaining game, helped rather than hindered by the appalling windy conditions, both sides went hell for leather, creating many chances and managed to show plenty of skill. Millwall are a good team and on this showing deserve to be hunting for a play off place. Brentford's performance gave them a good run for their money and a Bees win on the day would not have been unfair.
From the kick off it was clear that John Bostock was a class above and most surprisingly at this level, two-footed! He was playing on the right side which apparently isn't his best! He scored the opening goal from a ball in the box from Dickson, he kept the ball at his feet looking for a way past the Millwall defenders blocking his path to goal. Some good footwork saw him make some space before smashing it into the corner of the net.
A few minutes later Millwall charged towards the Bees goal with defenders backing off - a constant throughout the game - and inexplicably Bennett seemed to move sideways to allow the man with the ball a clear shot at goal. It thumped against the crossbar and was eventually put out for a corner. The corner kick found Millwall's centre half in plenty of space and he headed it wide of Price and into the net.
The clearest indication of the effect the wind was having on the game came with the Bees' second goal. A corner by Bostock curled suddenly just as it was arriving at the near post, evaded Jason Price and the goalkeeper and went straight in. Comedy goals are always fun and the argument the keeper and Price had afterwards was even funnier.
There were plenty of chances throughout the rest of the game, the pick being Charlie MacDonald's drive against the post. Harris, up front for Millwall, showed excellent awareness and was constantly finding space whereas Charlie MacDonald was frustratingly being caught offside almost every time we hit the ball forward.
Bees' hearts were broken in the 89th minute when a curling free kick eluded Price and dropped into the bees net to make it 2-2. It seemed quite a way out and I don't think the wind had anything to do with it. It was just an excellent strike. As was Karleigh Osborne's just a minute or two later. He controlled the ball just outside the box, swung his right foot at it, the ball arced beautifully over everyone and smashed against the underside of the bar and bounced out. It would have been a magnificent goal and capped a magnificent display by the bees.
My man of the match was John Bostock, for scoring two goals and looking class throughout. James Wilson gets a special mention for being our best defender and saving us with a few last ditch tackles and showing good awareness throughout. Myles Weston also played well marauding down the left.
Strevens played a full ninety minutes for the bees and acquitted himself very well. Foster continually backed off and off when anybody ran at him which caused mayhem at the back. I do hope we haven't found the new Matt Somner!
Brilliant game, brilliant atmosphere, thoroughly enjoyable day. Hurrah! Shame we only got one point but this could put some belief back in the side.
Thanks to Beefeater and beesotted for the match report.
