Single-Shot Dons Down Aldershot

Wimbledon made it three wins in a row with a scrappy 1-0 victory at fellow relegation battlers Aldershot Town on Saturday (16 March) to take another step towards League Two survival.
The hosts may have had the more numerous goalscoring opportunities, but they failed to display Jack Midson’s clinical finishing as the Dons’ leading goalscorer neatly chipped home to secure all three points.
Midson’s goal came after 72 minutes, as Aldershot conceded possession cheaply in their own area after Harry Pell’s shot had been saved. Although Kevin Sainte-Luce was successfully challenged, the ball fell kindly to Midson who kept his head and chipped the ball home for the only goal of the game.
Afterwards he told the club’s official website: ‘We worked really hard today. We knew what kind of game it was going to be on a tough pitch, but I think we dealt with it better than they did.
‘They bombared us a bit at the end and could have nicked a goal, but we grafted hard and we have to do that right until the end of this season.’
Crucial though Midson’s goal was, this win was also down to a good performance by Dons’ on-loan Charlton goalkeeper, John Sullivan.
Sullivan was first in action in the 12th minute, turning away an effort from Lionel Ainsworth, and was grateful that Craig Reid completely fluffed his attempt from the follow-up.
The Dons were having the better of the possession but, without carving out many openings, were allowing efforts at the other end. Jonathan Meades blocked one Ainsworth effort and the same player saw another shot deflected over.
Wimbledon made a half-time switch to try and tip the balance, with Rashid Yussuff switching to the left flank to try and stem the Aldershot attacks down that flank, and Sainte-Luce coming on to pose problems for the home side down the right.
The Dons started the second period more brightly but again saw the home side spurn two chances. First Ainsworth struck the post with a fierce drive, and then Asa Hall had his effort turned round by Sullivan.
But then came Midson’s moment, striking to put the Dons ahead and spark celebrations among the 1100+ travelling Wimbledon fans. And after that, the home side’s vigour waned, allowing the Dons to retain the lead for the remainder of the match.
After Saturday’s games, the bottom five teams in League Two are all level on 40 points, then come York on 41 points with the Dons now in 18th on 45 points, five clear of the relegation zone.
They face a potential banana skin with a trip to bottom side Accrington Stanley on Tuesday (19 March) before entertaining Morecambe next Saturday (23 March).
