The Worlds most senseless war - Avaaz petition

Below is an email, I received from Avaaz.Dear friends, In days, a group of powerful world leaders will ask the UN to end the war on drugs and move towards regulation. But politicians say that the public will not support alternative drug policies. Let's give this unique opportunity massive public support and get urgent action. Sign below, and tell everyone:   In days, we could finally see the beginning of the end of the ‘war on drugs’. This expensive war has completely failed to curb the plague of drug addiction, while costing countless lives, devastating communities, and funneling trillions of dollars into violent organized crime networks. Experts all agree that the most sensible policy is to regulate, but politicians are afraid to touch the issue. In days, a global commission including former heads of state and foreign policy chiefs of the UN, EU, US, Brazil, Mexico and more will break the taboo and publicly call for new approaches including decriminalization and regulation of drugs. This could be a once-in-a-generation tipping-point moment -- if enough of us call for an end to this madness. Politicians say they understand that the war on drugs has failed, but claim the public isn't ready for an alternative. Let's show them we not only accept a sane and humane policy -- we demand it. Click below to sign the petition and share with everyone --if we reach 1 million voices, it will be personally delivered to world leaders by the global commission: http://www.avaaz.org/en/end_the_war_on_drugs/?vl For 50 years current drug policies have failed everyone, everywhere but public debate is stuck in the mud of fear and misinformation. Everyone, even the UN Office on Drugs and Crime which is responsible for enforcing this approach agrees -- deploying militaries and police to burn drug farms, hunting down traffickers, and imprisoning dealers and addicts – is an expensive mistake. And with massive human cost -- from Afghanistan, to Mexico, to the USA the illegal drug trade is destroying countries around the world, while addiction, overdose deaths, and HIV/AIDS infections continue to rise.Meanwhile, countries with less-harsh enforcement -- like Switzerland, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Australia -- have not seen the explosion in drug use that proponents of the drug war have darkly predicted. Instead, they have seen significant reductions in drug-related crime, addiction and deaths, and are able to focus squarely on dismantling criminal empires. Powerful lobbies still stand in the way of change, including military, law enforcement, and prison departments whose budgets are at stake. And politicians fear that voters will throw them out of office if they support alternative approaches, as they will appear weak on law and order. But many former drug Ministers and Heads of State have come out in favour of reform since leaving office, and polls show that citizens across the world know the current approach is a catastrophe. Momentum is gathering towards new improved policies, particularly in regions that are ravaged by the drug trade. If we can create a worldwide outcry in the next few days to support the bold calls of the Global Commission on Drug Policy, we can overpower the stale excuses for the status quo. Our voices hold the key to change -- Sign the petition and spread the word:http://www.avaaz.org/en/end_the_war_on_drugs/?vl We have a chance to enter the closing chapter of this brutal 'war' that has destroyed millions of lives. Global public opinion will determine if this catastrophic policy is stopped or if politicians shy away from reform. Let's rally urgently to push our hesitating leaders from doubt and fear, over the edge, and into reason. Security Alert!!!!

ALERTS TO THREATS IN 2011 EUROPEThe English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Libya and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.  The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.  The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.  Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."  The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose." Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels . The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish  navy.Australia , meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is canceled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level. The great alliance is at work again.

Pubs & Lemonade

I have to admit I rarely frequent pubs and therefore have scant knowledge of their prices.  However, I recently found myself at the refurbished Coach & Horses in London Road, Isleworth the other day for lunch, which was ok.  Not great but the pub itself is very nice.  Last time I was in it was probably 30 years aqo and I liked it then.Anyway, I took my two grandchildren there for lunch on Thursday last as it was a sunny day and they have a nice outside area.  I bought a bottle of their Chilean Sauvignon Blanc which according to the menu was £17.95 and my granddaughter wanted a lemonade (thankfully my grandson only wanted tap water).  When the barman rang up £18 + for the wine and then £2.40 for the lemonade, I naturally queried it.  It seemed he had overcharged for the wine but lemonade was £2.40 for less than half a pint (since the glass was full of ice)out of a gun (which is just syrup and soda) therefore presumably lemonade would be £4.80 a pint!  Since most of their beers there seem to be £4 a pint (which I am told is quite a lot anyway) can anyone tell me if £2.40 for a small lemonade is normal in pubs?  If so, How the heck can anyone afford to go out?  Last night I was in the Plough in Northfields where I ate probably the worst meal I have had out in a very long time.  Barnsley lamb chop with mash £12.95.  My nephew had the same.  Neither of us could chew the meat at all whether it was the cooking or the quality of the meat I do not know but it should have been in stew not served as a pub meal at a restaurant price.  I asked the barman how much lemonade was in there and got a very bizarre price structure.  Evidently he decided a splash of lemonade was £1.25, half pint would be £2.25 and a pint £2.65?  I am old enough to remember the days when soda and lemonade was free on the bars of most pubs. I am now on a mission to discover where it may be affordable in the area to take children not to mention somewhere that serves decent edible food that you do not need to take out a mortgage to buy so any ideas would be gratefully received.  I am well aware that pubs make their profits from the mixers and soft drinks but hey, there's profit and then there's plain robbery!

BBC. FAO: Mark Thompson. Director General

Saturday, 30 April 2011.http://www.bbc.co.ukFAO: Mark Thompson. Director General.  BBC UK... Dear Mr Thompson after reading this request would you forward this to the appropriate department or circulate the proposition amongst the writers who are presently finishing up for their production departments.Last Wednesday as I was watching a channel 2 programme it suddenly struck me that you and the fellow members of the beeb could help in educating the elderly in a crucial social change that could without being too dramatic help to keep the elderly and infirmed in their homes for just that little extra time that it would take to come to terms with what most fear.Over the years I have personally seen residents in their own homes badgered out of their own properties because the television is too loud, and over prolonged periods of time and without even realizing that they where even disturbing their neighbours or were having hearing problems at all, the decision is made to approach the in-laws and of course the inevitable ensues, as I have witnessed at first hand and found that in almost all circumstances that ‘arrangements ‘ have been made and it is too late to rethink the situation.Hearing aids just do not cut it ,not with all of that surround sound and no instant reduction without  having to search around your ears first, a simple comfortable head phone and a hand held control and suddenly your on top of noise fluctuation and this terrible overlooked injustice that it seems no one has even recognised exists just goes away.Mr Thompson with your help and just a very simple insertion into a programme story line a person watching TV too loud is given a set of comfortable headphones plugged directly into the set  and has a substantial lead to allow movement some distance from the set, the ear cups would show as being very generous and comfortable to wear with a  simple junction splitter that would give other users the ability to join in[plug in] and in my own experience it is a very comfortable and personal way to enjoy television in a group dwelling built without extensive modern sound proofing that can handle HD transmitting equipment with engaged surround sound already switched on when it is delivered from the store..We  have used Technique HP with the large padded ear cup and 5m lead for years not because we have hearing problems but because it brings an extra private dimension to the television watching experience especially late at night and the headphones are just sitting around full on, and should you manage to make the take up of head phones look more fashion functional, then the possible usual  stigma’s would not even be an issue just a progressional  upgrade in user functionality to include those with diminishing hearing.Mark, please do this for Marie, Mr Gardner Flt 1, and the lovely Pippa who would always greet you with a word perfect passage from the book, her last one to me was Mark: Chapter One. Blessed are the peacemakers. That’s you!Thank you all at the beeb....Yrskk.
