Alan K££n speaks to the local Times

Words fail me regarding this man, he believes it would be “good fun” to meet constituents face-to-face and justify the couple’s expenses, but had no plans to hold a public meeting so no surprise there then from either of these spongers!!Alan Keen has refused to apologise for his and his wife’s expenses claims – saying “We’ve done nothing wrong”. The Feltham and Heston MP said it would be impossible to do their jobs without their second home – a £500,000 flat on the river Thames – where they spend most of the working week. Mr Keen and his wife Ann Keen, MP for Brentford and Isleworth, travel to central London on a Monday and stay at the apartment until Thursday or Friday. He said: “I have seen people’s arguments saying ‘I work shifts’, but their shift doesn’t go from Monday lunchtime consistently until Friday lunchtime. “It is not comparable to any other job. We have done absolutely nothing wrong, our consciences are completely clear. “I bet you that anybody who travels anywhere back home in outer London, I bet they don’t work as many hours as Ann and I work, because it wouldn’t be possible.” He said public anger over the expenses row was “completely understandable”, saying reports such as claims for moat clearing and helipads were “absolutely appaling”. But he blamed the “archaic” system for the scandal, adding: “We have always just gone along with whatever the rules were.” He said because he and his wife were both MPs, their lifestyle was very different to outer London MPs who do not claim for a second home allowance, saying: “With two of us, really we don’t have any life in the evenings and weekends. “I wake up at 5am usually, I am on the computer at 6am doing stuff three mornings a week. Ann is a night person and I am a morning person. “I wake her up at 8am, we talk about a matter of politics usually until 8.30am, and then we go to work. “I don’t know how on earth Ann manages. If we get home during Newsnight, I will fall asleep before the end of it, but Ann will start on a box at midnight and works on it for one-and-a-half or two hours, and that has to be done for the next morning. “If somebody stayed with us for a week they would see it is not a normal sort of job.” Following interim reforms to the expenses system this week, the couple will no longer both be able to claim for their Thames apartment, but Mr Keen said they had no plans to sell up. He said: “We would be better off straight away if we sold the flat and moved to Brentford. Will we do that? No, we won’t because we don’t believe we can do our jobs anywhere near as well if we have to travel in and out all the time.” He added that it would be “good fun” to meet constituents face-to-face and justify the couple’s expenses, but had no plans to hold a public meeting. He said: “We think we have abided by the rules and by the culture. It’s the culture that people do not understand, people have little understanding of what an MP does.”

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - Brentford High Street Christmas Lights Fundraising Evening (Thurs 24 Sept)

Dear AllSyon Park have kindly agreed to host the Brentford High Street Christmas Lights Fundraising Evening on Thurs 24 Sept at The Great Conservatory.Julia Quilliam (who leads on this project for the High Street Steering Group) has met with Professor Chris Birch, Pro Vice-CHancellor and Director of the Strategic Business Enterprise Unit at Thames Valley  University.  The Professor is very interested in our event and is keen for the University to be involved although it will be the very start of the new term year. They can hopefully provide a string quartet from their music department and also take control of the catering (fantastic!).  As long as there are possible future employers at the event he may be able to justify covering some of the costs including food which is very kind. Between us and the Chamber of Commerce we know lots of key employers in Brentford so it shouldn't be a problem. The non existance of kitchen facilities at the Great Conservatory meanns choosing a menu is a challenge in respect of heating, serving etc also crockery, cutlery supplies.  Prof Birch suggested a good quality buffet and good disposable plates.  We can probably get the champagne/ wine and glasses from Majestic or a local independent retailer.  We can have lots of candles in the conservatory which will create a magical atmostphere and we can do our own table flower/plant decorations.  Along with a string quartet or similar a lack china plates and hot food will not be a problem.  We might be able to do some hot food, just waiting now to hear back from TVU.  Julia is now going to check out table and chair hire and a few other bits to get an idea of costing. A figure of £35 was suggested at the last High Street Meeting for tickets. We need a florist who might be willing to teach us how to do some effective yet inexpensive table decorations.  Julia is quite happy to give it a go.  Does anyone know someone local?  We could then sell off the table displays. We also need to start asking local firms and residents for donations for the auction and raffle.  What Julia needs now are *volunteers* to help with the above issues and marketing the event.  Please contact Julia directly (julia@quilliam-property.co.uk) if you can help with what should be a fabulous event, which is also so important to ensure that we can maintain Brentford's Christmas lights. Many thanks and best wishesAndrewCouncillor for Brentford WardChair, Brentford High Street Steering Group

Operation Lightning

Today I walked the length of Brentford High Street from Ealing Road to the canal bridge taking a photograph of each shop.  This is for a little personal project I have to record some of the changes that are taking place locally. In the middle of the High Street I was stopped by two police officers and asked what I was taking photographs of.  I told them, and was then advised that under “Operation Lightning”, relating to anti-terrorism legislation, it can be an offence to take photographs of “transport infrastructure” (I was standing with my back to the road, but there was a reflection of a bus in the shop window); or of buildings where the information in the photographs could assist terrorist activity, by, for instance, showing weak points in buildings (there were flats above the shops).  I asked what could be determined from such photographs that could not be equally well determined by just looking at the buildings.  I was told that this was really for my protection – someone might mug me for said information.  If they knew who I was and what I was doing and why, then . . . . . what? The surreal nature of this conversation was confirmed when I offered my name and address, thinking that this had gone far enough and would be brought to a close; But no, they did want my name and address!  Form 5090(X) was filled in, I was given my copy and we parted.  They were entirely civil and pleasant throughout the whole encounter and were happy for me to continue taking photographs.Do you all feel safer now?

Alan Keen speaks to the Chronicle

This is simply unbelievable!!Alan Keen comes out fighting over expensesMay 20 2009 By Ed Saunt Alan Keen MPFeltham MP Alan Keen has launched a passionate defence of his role in the expenses scandal, claiming he has never told a lie in his life.He and wife Ann – who is MP for Brentford & Isleworth – have been pilloried for claiming almost £140,000 over four years for a flat in Westminster just 10 miles from their home in Brentford. The couple have been dubbed 'Mr & Mrs Expenses' by the media but Mr Keen has come out fighting, telling The Chronicle the public don't understand the culture of Parliament, his claims have always been 'above reproach', and he has never told a lie in his life.He said he has been shocked at the claims of his fellow members. However, the pressure has not eased on the Labour MP as the public have vented their anger and opposition politicians have said it is time for him to go.Mr Keen has pledged to stand his ground and argued that it would be impossible for him to do his work and make the 30 minute commute every day.“People may say they commute into London but there are not many people who work from early in the morning to very late at night every day. It is a very unusual culture,” he said. “It seems unreasonable to some people but they don't understand the house is active every night of every day, irrespective of whether there are votes.”“Yes of course there's a problem with the system. I have been surprised to say the least at what other people have been claiming but our claims have always been above reproach.”One of the alleged claims highlighted in a report in The Telegraph was for £50 for a service call to reconfigure the sound on the Keen's Bose home cinema system.“They [The Telegraph] have twisted the truth to put a different slant on it. That was just a repair to the sound of the TV,” Mr Keen argued. “We claim for what are the basic necessities. We don't claim for everything we are entitled to. We are not money-grabbing. If we were we would claim for furniture and a TV and all that. All we would have to do is fill in a claim form.“In my whole life I have not told a lie apart from little white ones.”Mr and Mrs Keen have face criticism throughout the media and Mark Bowen, who will stand for the Conservatives against Mr Keen in the next election thinks the public will not forget quickly.Mark Bowen said: “Like 99% of residents in Feltham and Heston I don't believe it to a reasonable or justifiable explanation. There is no shame here from Mr Keen and I think his constituents will be appalled and disgusted. His explanation sounds very arrogant and I think it's time that he went.”http://www.hounslowchronicle.co.uk/west-london-news/local-hounslow-news/2009/05/20/alan-keen-comes-out-fighting-over-expenses-109642-23675929/

Brentford has Britain's most costly MP

According to the Daily Mail:"Health Minister Ann Keen has been confirmed as Britain's most costly MP. Her expenses claim totalled a whopping £167,306 in the last financial year - the highest excluding transport costs, which disproportionately affect some English and Welsh and all Scottish MPs. "Her husband Alan, who represents a neighbouring seat, claimed a total of £146,408, bringing the couple's overall cost to the taxpayer to £313,714 in the last financial year - excluding travel costs. "The couple, nicknamed 'Mr and Mrs Expenses', claimed the extraordinary costs despite living just a 30-minute drive from Westminster."The claims came on top of their annual salary, which was worth £61,820 to each at the time, and a gold-plated final salary pension scheme. "The MPs represent adjoining constituencies in West London, nine miles from the House of Commons, and live in their constituency home in Brentford. "In all, the Keens, who are officially 'outer London MPs', received a total of £38,193 in second-home allowance alone, to cover the cost of running the cost of an apartment on the South Bank, a short walk from the House of Commons. "The property's value has risen from an estimated £500,000 in 2002 to around £750,000 today - meaning the pair are estimated to have built up a £250,000 property nestegg courtesy of the taxpayer."There is no suggestion that Mrs Keen, 60, and her 71-year-old husband broke the rules. However, critics claim they live so near to the Commons that they should be able to claim only the inner London supplement of £2,700. Last year it emerged that Mrs Keen had insured her husband's life for £430,000 and put the premium on expenses. That is despite the fact that both members are covered thanks to their parliamentary pensions. "Mrs Keen also became the first MP to face action for breaching the 'duty of care' to a constituent. She was ordered to pay £15,000 in damages to 84-year- old war veteran John Taylor for failing to represent him in his battle to clear his name after a miscarriage of justice, although the case has yet to be resolved. "The other expenses she claimed include £104,508 in office costs, £10,000 in communication costs, £19,142 in staff cover and other costs and £5,497 in stationery. In addition to his second-home claim of £19,855, Mr Keen's overall bill also included £13,449 in office running costs, £97,101 in staffing costs and £9,786 in communication costs and £3,549 in stationery costs."A spokesman for Mrs Keen refused to comment on her expenses.
