High Tide Weekend

This weekend sees the highest predicted tides of the year. 1700 hrs on Monday will be the highest, but today was already a good one, though not the highest I’ve seen. Fine for those of us on boats, (provided the mooring arrangements can cope), but threatening for others.Platypus just about reaching the gangplank’s limit of angle!

Any CELEBRITIES in Brentford?

Are there many celebrities living in Brentford; now or in the past? So far on this site I've only heard of Pocahontas, Julius Caesar and a mention of Stan Bowles. There must be many more. Who are they and are they seen around the place? What are they like?I'm amazed that a similar community site topic in Chiswick features more than a hundred posts on celebrities who frequent the environs of Turnham Green Terrace and Chiswick High Road. I know there are some pleasant parts a mile or so east of Brentford, but its not exactly a Notting Hill, an Islington, a Covent Garden or a Chelsea! What about celebs in sunny Brentford? Are there many? Are there any?

River Brent Drowning

I've been completely oblivious to this, only having just now come across the news item in a national website:CANAL CLOSED AFTER BODY FOUNDTHE Grand Union Canal was closed this week after a body was discovered in the water in Brentford, Gill Owen tells us.British Waterways worked with the police in order to help them undertake their investigations with the canal closed immediately from Thames Locks to Brentford Gauging Locks.Navigation has now resumed, and the boats held up have now continued on their way. 30/05..................Not a very comprehensive investigation when resident boaters were not asked questions! Anyone else know details?

Kew Bridge Road dug up again

I don’t believe it! After the local Authority waiting for all works to finish on Kew Bridge Road to resurface it, someone has gone and dug it up again by the Shell Garage. Was this new work planned a while ago or emergency work? As it looks like we are heading back to patch work Brentford again.

Mayor to end Venezuelan oil deal

Is this because he is more interested in pursuing his right-wing ideological agenda or is he right about Londoners feeling uncomfortable about the bus operation of one of the world's financial powerhouses being funded by the people of a country where many people live in extreme poverty. I personally think the first one.

The Brentford Boom

Thanks to all for recommending the Brewery Tap pub. I will be down tonight for some skiffle. When I walk around that area I'm struck by how many closed business's and factories there are. Brentford must of been such a boomtown. I've asked locals who say it was very busy, chemical works and boatyard. It seems just as intense as the old "Golden Mile". Perhaps the recent development will see some of this industry return. Any memories?

23rd June Eviction Day for many...South of the High Street

Wakey, wakey!!!!There is a danger that buildings South of the High Street (SOTHS) (that maybe we'd like to see KEPT ) that need protection for future renovation could be raided and have various internal fittings removed once evictions start to take effect next week. The word "Firestones" comes to mind. Does it for YOU!!?? You will have seen the fencing off of many properties SOTHS, as the present owners of the land accelerate taking possession..hoping for a nice little earner no doubt from the future development!!   The barricaded buildings are being kept under observation by teams of security guards who patrol the area...but are they totally trustworthy? Are their mates on the way to start extracting goodies? The future for Brentford High Street and SOTHS is being considered in high places. Reports have been drawn up, "some ground breaking ideas" are being published …see High Street Newsletter issue No 3 June 07 for starters.) At the Civic Centre a webcam recording of the Executive Council Meeting of 5th June saw Cllr Barbara Reid outline the Brentford Report that was in her possession.  Cllr Andrew Dakers and his colleagues seem to have undertaken a massive study of the whole subject..and have produced very commendable and extensive reports themselves and have gather around them many consultative groups. Very well done to Andrew. The question of whether the area SOTHS should become a  Conservation Area  was raised at that Council meeting and at the local Isleworth and Brentford Area Meeting..but the matter seems to be on hold...although a CA could be quickly considered and voted on prior to demolitions and developement..if need be…according to the webcam broadcast. However a most urgent aspect of the whole survival of several heritage gems SOTHS..is to safeguard them from scrap merchants and the like..who are probably known by those securing the properties.  Apparently it is the Barrymore Group who are this fortnight actively evicting many tenants...and I don't suppose they will be too bothered if certain buildings get damaged or assaulted in any way..as they probably would prefer to see the lot all knocked down in any case!! Buildings bashed in..or with features removed..behind our backs..would not worry the the landlords..you can be sure!! Systematic pillaging from the empty buildings by vandals and plunderers who make off with metals and antique fittings to make a quick buck must not start..although I gather that it has already recently happened in Catherine Wheel Road. Many of us want to save some of the heritage. There are scalleywags out there who couldn't care tuppence!In some ways Ballymore can do what they like behind those barracades.....and if the worst happens..we will have just sat and watched. At least if SOTHS was designated a  Conservation Area soonest..there is a chance that some of our local treasures can be saved...and the "in the know" scalleywags could be kept at bay. At present there is no guarantee.

Praise for Cllr Fisher

I should like to place on record, my sincere thanks to this gentleman for his efforts to help me out with a problem. I asked him for "advice" and although he is not my wards councillor, he didn't fob me off. I had asked my ward councillor to get CIP to do something about the weeds and brambles that were encroaching into my garden from Inwood park. Cllr Fisher has managed to arrange fot this to be done through another agency within 72 hrs. Now that is what I call "care in the community"  Thanks a bundle Paul, you are a star!

Crozier and Leighton a disastrous double act

Just to cheer us all up this Bank Holiday weekend Royal Mail have revealed that Chief Executive Adam Crozier pocketed more that £3 million last year. This after a year which has seen the worst strike for decades and a huge slump in profits and the proposed closure of 2,500 Post Offices.  To add insult to injury, if you can bear it, the other numpty Alan Leighton so-called Chairman of Royal Mail was paid £200.000 and had the gall to defend Crozier who by the way gets £45.000 as a part-time director of Debenhams! On top of that the quaintly called managing director of letters left with a pay-off of £500.000. No wonder they want to shut Post Offices and cut mail deliveries, someone has to pay for these morons to stay and bugger things up a bit more. Don't even get me started on the M.P's exes published today! These people are all taking the p*** big time, and the rest of us are expected to settle for pathetic pay rises because they add to inflation if we don't! God give me strength.
