Meet your local Police Saturday morning

This new joint surgery is something Cllr Shirley Fisher has been trying to get organised for many months with the local Police and hopefully residents from the Syon Ward will come out and show their support. If it is a success then more joint surgeries in addition to the normal ones held by the three Syon Cllrs will be organised.Syon Ward Safer Neighbourhood Team would like to invite you to their summer surgery. You can come and speak to your local Police Officers as well as a Syon Ward Councillor. The surgery will be held at the Rose Community Centre, Hawthorne Road, Brentford from 10:30 till 12:00 on Saturday 30th June 2007. They will be promoting the use of an online service called IMMOBILISE. This is where you can register your property for FREE; including mobile phones, pedal cycles and most household electrical items. So if you ever have items stolen they will be able to trace the rightful owner and return your property. The team are currently warning that Satellite navigation theft is on the increase; make sure you remove the unit and the holder. Thieves are interested in all your property from mobile phones, laptop computers, handbags and briefcases don’t leave them on show. They are also telling residents to secure all windows and doors to keep your belongings safe as the weather gets hotter. Crime prevention advice can be obtained free from your local police crime prevention officer on 0208 247 6423. They would like to hear from anyone who wants to get involved in starting up a neighbourhood watch scheme. To find out more speak to them at the summer surgery or call them on 0208 247 5989.

Tory/ICG Cuts - Housing Need, Day Centre charges, CIP, and Watermans.

Council Meeting - 7.30 Tuesday 6th March at the Civic Centre.Well it looks as though the Tories have managed to pusuade the ICG to make cuts to front-line services (on top of the cuts already pushed through the previous 2 Council meetings; day centre escorts, Community Teachers, the Language services, the schools music service, increased parking charges etc).  None of the following proposals have been to Scrutiny, or for consultation to vulnerable users or their families - so they were not revealed by the Executive until Friday. The price of no increase in Council Tax?Well; Cut one or both of the ONLY two Tenancy Relation Posts, who provide legal advice to private Sector Tenants dealing with Landlord issues including eviction.Delete a post in Homeless Persons Unit – reducing capacity to help people who are, or about to be, HomelessDelete a Housing Grants officer post – helping disabled people get adaptations in their homesCharge £2 per day to all users of Day Care Centres (Old people currently pay £1, Disabled people pay nothing at present, unless they have lunch)Cut grant to Watermans by £60,000 (from total grant of £240,00).  May mean a double cut for Watermans as the Arts Council grant matches the Council Grant.Cut CIP Budget by £200,000, bound to affect Parks, leisure centres, or both.  etc etcViews please!Cllr Ruth Cadburyon behalf of the Labour Group of Councillors

Liberty Organisation

YOUR RIGHTS UNDER SECTION 44:Shami Chakrabarti of the Human Rights group "Liberty" has published the following information, which I am sure, that in this time of terrorists threats, will be most helpful for the police to carry out protection duties for public safety. You will note that those stopped do not have to give THEIR names, but the police have togive all THEIR personal information..........Hardly surprising that we have the problems we have. No mention of males being searched by females either...why not?  • The police can only give you a pat down, remove outer clothes (eg jacket, hat), search your bags and have you empty your pockets • You do not have to give your name and address • You do not have to explain why you are there • You are not allowed to flee the search, but you are not required to be actively compliant. You are allowed to 'go limp' as passive resistance during the search if you wish not to comply • There is no permission to collect DNA data during the search • You do not have to comply with any attempt to photograph or record you • Women cannot be touched by male police during these searches • Make notes about the officers searching you - name, number and police force • Note the time and the events preceding the search • Note the specific wording used by the police to explain their authority to search you • Ask the police for the reason that they are searching you. Specifically, are they searching for terrorists or are they simply trying to deter, delay or inconvenience you? Very helpful that, better some inconvenience or delay, than risk of another 7/7 incident! Afterwards: • Hold on to the Search Record or any other documentation the police give you (or note if you don't receive one)• Make brief notes about the search while you still remember all the details • Do not write anything down on the day, that you don't want disclosed to the police. Police may search you again and be able to read anything that you have written down • Please complete and submit Liberty's search monitoring form • Consider making a complaint to the Independent Police Complaints Commission • Write to Lord Carlile, the independent monitor of the implementation of anti-terrorism legislation (Lord Carlile of Berriew QC, The House of Lords London SW1A 0AA) • Consider pressing charges if the officers used unnecessary force during the search.
