Vanessa elected to the committee of The Isleworth Society

The Isleworth Society, of which I am a proud Life Member, announced the election of a number of good new people to its managing committee this week, including this forum's own Vanessa Smith.TIS is an ever-present force in Isleworth, doing some fantastic work in monitoring planning developments as well as helping to retain important historical and cultural perspectives.I'm sure other contributors to the forum will agree that Vanessa's appointment will add yet more steel to an already thriving and formidable presence in our community which was never more needed than it is today, and will join me in wishing her the very best of luck with her new work.

Boston Manor Park

Brilliant news that Boston Manor House has won some lottery money.  What a shame then that this weekend the Park is host to a techno rave (whatever that is) and we are to have portable loos installed from Boston Manor Station to the Park and much of the park closed for most of the week.  Question is how much have the promoters paid for this event and who would get the money, the Council or Carillion ?

“Without Lawful Authority” - Canal & River Trust Cannot Evict Our Boats

Following from the TW8 article of Feb 12 [Challenge in Royal Courts of Justice], some may be aware that judgment was handed down last Thursday by Lord Justice Mummery of the Court of Appeal, declaring that the “eviction notices” served on my boats by the then British Waterways Board were invalid. The authority has been ordered to pay 75% of my costs at Appeal and in the Court below.The significance of the ruling goes way beyond waterways legislation, because the victory was based – not on waterways legislation per se, but – on the true interpretation of the phrase “without lawful authority”.I claimed that the High Court judgment last year, regardless of any findings on common law riparian rights or mooring rights from whatever source, was constitutionally unsound, because it violated a central foundation principle of the free, libertarian society that our constitution purports to provide for.My argument was that the phrase “without lawful authority” could only apply with reference to some law that was being breached; the High Court judge disagreed. The Appellate Court has now agreed with me that his finding on this was wrong. Lord Justice Mummery quoted from Sir Robert Megarry V.-C in a 1979 case saying: “England, it may be said, is not a country where everything is forbidden except what is expressly permitted: it is a country where everything is permitted except what is expressly forbidden.”  As some legal websites have commented, the affirmation of this constitutional principle affects the understanding of the thousands of Parliamentary Acts that  incorporate the same, common phrase. Hopefully the decision will assist in preventing continuing abuse of authority perpetrated by those in power who forget that they, also, are constrained by the Rule of Law, quite as much as we the governed. They will no longer be able to pretend that their whim has the status of law.A certain ruefulness creeps into consideration of the fact that it has taken 6 years for the court system to acknowledge and confirm so basic a right of the citizen. It is also sobering to reflect on all those prior cases where the authority succeeded in unlawfully evicting private boats in furtherance of their own financial schemes – it is contrary to natural justice that such abuse should have succeeded against anyone less “stubborn & relentless”, as I was described by the judge below!

Council taking money from Residents but not providing the services

Back in March during the bank holiday there were a number of residents who were left without hot water and heating for up to 6 days. Now for the past 6 days residents in Thrilmere have had no hot water or heating again for 6 days.T Brown told me on Tuesday it be up and running that day, then i was informed on Tuesday Evening by the council that they were waiting for parts which would be delivered yesterday morning and fitted that day. Last night at 6pm i called T Brown and was informed it was fixed at 5pm and to give it 3-4hrs and we would all be up and running again.This has not happened and on day 6 we still haven't got hot water or heating and T Brown say they have a engineer on site and it be back on today.Residents are so angry because we all pay the council around £10 a week for heating and hot water but they are not getting the services they pay for.Already residents in tower blocks have been angry for years over paying for a concierge service that they do not get (only Easedale is manned) but everyone in the other 3 tower blocks have to pay for concierge.Residents should not have to live like this or pay for services they do not get but it seems the council are not listening.

Revised proposals were placed on Hounslow Council's planning website on 29 January with a deadline for comment of 8 February. The school room where Sarah Trimmer ran her industrial school for girls (teaching useful skills like spinning and needlework) as well as Sunday School classes would be partially demolished and converted in a destructive and inappropriate scheme creating 3 small "duplex apartments". Inserted partition walls and floors, changes to windows and new doorways would make it impossible to understand its original function. The building retains its original character and should therefore be conserved both as a fabric and as a record of Sarah Trimmer herself.Sarah Trimmer HallSt George's church and Trimmer HallSarah Trimmer was an important figure in the history of national educational reform.  Sarah was active in the Sunday School movement and in founding schools for the poor. She also gave birth to 12 children.Local historian Val Bott contacted the Director of Regeneration, Economic Development and Environment, Brendon Walsh, at the beginning of January to ask what was happening and to emphasise how important the building is, but received no response until she also contacted the Leader of the Council. "At a time when Brentford is changing rapidly it really matters that we preserve those things which remind us that it is a town with a proud history", said Val Bott, "and I hope local people will object most strongly now. The building could be profitably converted into an elegant single home, retaining its lofty central hall with upper rooms at each end of the building if only the developers took advice from an experienced conservation architect".The Brentford Community Council wrote in their objection "The three separate units proposed once again by IDM will effectively destroy the building leaving little more than a façade from the original building. "The Trimmer School has an unusual and fascinating history and is thought by historians to be the last - or one of the last - industrial schools in England of its time. Lost camera in Carville Hall Park this BHW

I think I lost my little camera in Carville Hall Park this past Bank Holiday Weekend.  It was an old point and shoot camera.  Nothing special.  If anyone heard of someone coming across a camera or came across the camera themselves please let me know.  I don't really care about the camera itself just the photos that were on it.  I live locally in GWQ so if someone has the SD card that came with the camera can they please hand it into the Barratts office in the GWQ development.  Thanks

£50 for a garden waste service that isn't a service!!!

I paid for the new garden waste service and put out my brown bin last week last Tuesday evening ready for collection on the Wednesday (18th May). It was not collected so I rang up to report the missed collection on the Wednesday. Nothing happened so I rang up and spoke to someone who made an "urgent" report. I have e-mailed two missed collection reports and rung again. In all FIVE attempts to get my garden waste recycled. I now feel very silly at having wasted £50 on a service that does not seem to work. Perhaps I should have saved my money, disguised the garden waste in black bins bags, and stuck it in the waste wheelie bin. (which is apprently what alot of people are doing - so it will end up in landfill).

Public Meeting - reminder

There is a public meeting to discuss future plans for the Pit Park in Northcote Avenue Isleworth - now the Northcote Nature Reserve. Starting at 7.30.p.m. at All Souls Church just over the footbridge near the park. There will be a presentation of proposals thus far and a chance to ask questions and comment for anyone living near the area. Anyone who wishes to get more involved will be welcomed with open arms. This has been a unique collaboration of residents from L.B. Hounslow and L.B. Richmond and we look forward to as many people as possible attending. Our thanks to The Rev. Frank and curate Jez Carr, who will be in the Chair, for their help and support.

Do I smell a rat?

Just had a flyer through the door advertising 'Isleworth Riverside Artisan Market' also says they are fund raising for Isleworth Voluntary Care Network and Friends of Cathja. These markets which will just happen to take place in Church St. are planned right up until Christmas under the banner of 'Inspiring Isleworth'. Call me cynical - and I am - what a bare-faced attempt to justify the permanent closure of Church St. - and gentrify Church St. - how convenient. I can just imagine how that conversation went - let's hold some markets on lovely sunny, summer days and when people are full of Christmas cheer and then when the locals are re-consulted they'll all be on side to keep our little enclave free of the common mob. I actually think it is crass and shouldn't be allowed to take place whilst this is only a 'temporary closure', hiding behind raising money for worthy local charities is beneath contempt.

I have for several weeks been pondering on the coming Referendum vote. I eventually decided that I should WRITE to our Queen requesting her assistance to put to all the UK Citizens the reasons for us to leave the EU, with particular reference to our sovereignty and Immigration.
